Hello everyone!

It's october 1st today!! Time to announce the winners of the first contests!

Contest 1:

The winner of the Killer Application contest is...... Lee Brenton! Congratulations Lee!!!

Lee sent us a description of MEEM-H, the entertainment mime robot! This robot could be placed in any public place and perform mime sequences to entertain people. Lee also included an image of the robot to visualize his idea! Thanks Lee!

To the other contestants, many thanks for your submissions!! We hope you will participate again in future competitions!

Contest 2:

Unfortunately, due to a technical issue with the submission form we have not been able to retrieve all submissions for the REEM-C design contest! :(

We have solved the problem and were extending the contest until october 15th! So you have two more weeks to send (or re-send!!) your design!

Our apologies for the inconvenience, looking forward to receiving your designs!!

REEM-C design

Welcome to our second contest. This is getting more and more serious: there is a total of $2.000 in cash waiting for winners!

Your “mission” is to suggest a new and exciting aesthetic design for the external cover of our next generation of humanoid robots, which we provisionally call REEM-C (OK, you are right, we are not very imaginative when it comes to robot’s name, that’s why the name is provisional).

To participate, you can submit just a simple sketch done with a pencil or a rendering of a 3D model (and of course everything in the between). There are a few things that you must take into account:

  1. The robot should exhibit some key concepts: it is very strong, high tech but also friendly and elegant. We don’t want people to be scared off by the robot, but we don’t want them thinking it is a toy either. (Don’t forget that REEM-C is going to be 1.5 meters tall and one of the most advanced humanoid built so far).
  2. In terms of volumes, you should try being realistic. Very thin limbs or waist can’t be achieved. You can use as reference the proportions of REEM-B or the simple 3D models we have done in Blender (attachment).
  3. We want to see a continuity (or a consistency, if you prefer) between REEM-C and our last robot, REEM-H.  People must recognize  just by looking at them that they come from the same manufacturer.

The deadline for submission is the 1st of October 2010 . The winners will be announced on the 15th of October 2010. The prizes are:

1st prize: 1.200 USD (it will be assigned only if at least 15 eligible entries are received).

2nd prize: 600 USD (it will be assigned only if at least 20 eligible entries are received).

3rd prize: 200 USD (it will be assigned only if at least 25 eligible entries are received).

(Contestants need to have a PayPal account to be able to receive the prize money)

Don’t forget there is something even more important than just money: you are potentially contributing to one of the most advanced humanoid robots in the world.

These are example that you should NOT imitate (because they are not "friendly", they are not realistic or they look like toys):

Contest 1: The Killer Application

The first contest is just a way to “warm-up”. It is pretty easy, but it does not mean that it is not important to us.

FIRST PRIZE IS $500 CASH! Money mouth

Very soon, we are going to launch our new robot, REEM-H. The purpose of this new robot is to make a robotic platform that is commercially available and is more oriented than our REEM-B, for commercial applications. This is a short resume of its main features:

  1. It has wheels instead of legs and it can navigate independently in an indoor environment (office, shopping mall, house etc.). It moves well on any floor that a motorized wheelchair can move.
  2. It has a humanoid torso with a head and 2 arms and it can move as humans do. The hands are very simple and can grasp simple objects such as trays, bottles, cans of soft drinks, door handles etc..
  3. It has face detection and very basic voice recognition. It can detect the presence of humans around him. You cannot chat with the robot, yet.>
  4. A touchscreen on the chest of the robot is where media content and user interfaces can be displayed.

What we need are suggestions for killer applications for our robot; we have many ideas; museums guides, entertainment robot in shopping malls, platform for remote telepresence, to name just a few. But maybe you can suggest a better idea?

RULES

  • The prize will be awarded to the idea that is more:
    • ORIGINAL: Don’t try “nurse for older people”. It is unlikely you will be the only one thinking of that.
    • FEASIBLE: in the short term. It is a given that robots will be able to do amazing things in a decade or two, but this contest is about applications that can be done right now.
    • WELL WRITTEN: it should be understood. To us and to a larger audience as well.
  • You must present you idea in a title of maximum 100 characters and an abstract of maximum 1000 characters.
  • Only text in English will be reviewed.
  • The deadline for submissions is the 1st of October, 2010. Winner will be announced on the 15th of October 2010.<
  • The prize is 500 USD cash!

The detailed list of Terms & Conditions is listed in PDF file in attachment. Participating in this contest you declare that you have read and agreed to these rules.

You can find the webform to participate to the contest here: Click here for Contest

2 contests will be posted soon...

Before the end of the week we will post 2 contests.

One is about robot design while the other is more like a "brainstorming" with a prize for the best idea.

Stay tuned!
